My First Bento Lunches!
Made my first bento lunches, for Gerald and Graham! Also, photos of the onigiri that Graham and I made together! :D

My first bento, made for Gerald! There's a bottom layer (separated by parchment paper since I don't actually have a bento box) with tofu fried in sesame oil. Top layer are onigiri filled with soy sauce and katsuobushi flakes, tamago, hot dog octopi, and vegetable sushi!

The little container is filled with soy sauce (which I discovered goes well on everything, even the little hot dog octopuses!)

Bento I made for Graham for his first day of work! Not sure if he has access to a fridge there so I made it with all things that won't need to be cold. Bottom layer is chopped celery, carrots, and daikon radish. Next layer is apple slices, with lemon juice to keep them from browning, and the top layer is a PB&J (cut into a heart) with a lychee mochi.

My first onigiri, made with Graham! They are filled with soy sauce and katsuobushi flakes, and pickled plums.

since I don't actually have a bento box

You do now!

It's 2 layer, but small-ish otherwise. Those things are kind of small in general. The super-huge ones tend to be very expensive, even over there.

It explains why the drinks are usually the size of my pinky finger...>.>

Ooo, I am so excited!! :D Do I owe you any more money, or did the money I gave you cover everything ok?

Also, I'd love to meet up sometime soon so that I can hear about your trip! Maybe we can grab dinner together so that we can catch up and you can meet Graham?
Fluffymaru: Tokyofluffymaru on April 5th, 2010 03:25 pm (UTC)

Actually, I'm not sure, but I think you'll be getting some money back...we found you one smallish C.C. figure, but that was ALL. In all of TOKYO. They, like, disappeared, or something. And trust me...we did a SHITTON of stores. It was very bizarre. My advice would be to start snatching them up if you see them for a reasonable price...

Dinner sounds great...do you want to do it here, to see the videos and such, or out? I'm off work all this week...

Oh wow, that is crazy, I wonder why she was so rare? :o Maybe because Code Geass is over?

Dinner at your place sounds great, how about Wednesday evening? Graham says he's good for it, and would like to be able to meet you, we just can't stay TOO late.

Old Spice is the best. ♥
Fluffymaru: Drrr!_Paperplanefluffymaru on April 5th, 2010 10:05 pm (UTC)

Yeah, all I can think is that they finally sold out, but that she's popular enough that no one has given her up to the used stores yet. We were both pretty shocked. We found the big doll, and some small ones, but the normal sized stuff was all gone...

Wednesday is awesome! I'll clean...heh. What time, and what do you want to eat?

Would coming over around 6 tomorrow be good for you?
Fluffymaru: Kaiba_Lookfluffymaru on April 7th, 2010 03:01 am (UTC)

Sure, that's fine.

Any idea on what you guys might want to eat? Or at least something in the ballpark...?

:)

We're pretty much good with anything, but I know favorites of you and Casey are hamburger helper and tacos, both of which would be delish. But really, we'd be cool with whatever. :)

DO WANT!!!! Can we have an onigiri night? *_*
The Amanda: XD P4 THESE BALLS ARE ON FIREkichara on April 5th, 2010 05:42 pm (UTC)
That sounds awesome, we could make a ton of rice and have lots of different fillings, and then maybe have some plum wine to go with our onigiri! :3 Thsi might be easiest to do over at my place/Miko's, once me and Graham are settled into the apartment next door.

BTW, your icons are all pretty amazing!
Lina: Personal-CHEEEERSchibi_plum on April 5th, 2010 05:49 pm (UTC)
FFFF. Thank you. And yes! We have plum wine here, so we'll bring it over. How is the move going?

And awww. Thank you~<3

Move is pretty slow going right now, just getting our electricity on today (they were closed for Good Friday wtf), so we'll be able to finally vacuum the place. I'm not planning on moving in until May 1st, since I have to finish this crazy semester this month and have my portfolio review, but I'm moving my stuff over a bit at a time so hopefully it won't be too bad at the end of the month.

Also, talking on Twitter to Miko and our friend Alina and they are down with sushi making night, so I think we can combine the two to make a totally awesome weeaboo evening! X3
Lina: Personal-Addictedchibi_plum on April 5th, 2010 07:12 pm (UTC)
Hell yes! I'm totally down with that. Just let me know when. We'll be traveling for the next two weekends, but if you need any extra hands for moving, let us know. We would be happy to help.

Aww, thanks! :D I'll probably make a facebook page to organize sushi/onigiri night because it seems to be easiest to organize events on there. Just found you and sent you a friend request~

So cute!! XD Dude search for cute bento blogs, you'll get a lot of good ideas. This kinda reminds me of when I used to attempt to make this stuff in highschool ~ then I'd bring it in and we'd all sit around in the courtyard at school eating onigiri and octopus hotdogs like weaboos lol

I wish it look less time to prep/make cute bento lunches ;o;
The Amanda: -Pokaankichara on April 5th, 2010 05:44 pm (UTC)
Oh yes, I have already been doing lots of research, found some really nice flickr sites and I think my favorite site I've found so far is www.cookingcute.com ALSO got a book on Japanese/bento cooking with my bookbinding book I got from Amazon (so I could get the free shipping lol).

I actually made Gerald's last night, while Graham and I were making dinner. It makes it a bit easier if you're doing both meals at the same time. X3

If you have the half-size rice paddle, it makes onigiri pressing go way faster. If you refrigerate them, be sure to let them reach room temp before eating or else the rice will be hard & dry. :( I make mine in the mornings now after we had a disastrous cold onigiri experience when I made them the night before. You can put just about anything you want as filling: imitation crab bits, shrimp salad, tuna salad or just tuna & mayo, flavored/seasoned canned salmon or tuna, meat (like, if you make yakisoba for dinner, pick out some of the meat when you're done cooking to save for next day's lunch).

Nice job on all the goodies you made! You'll be a good Japanese mom because you plan your bento out of dinner just like they do here. I like your hearts & stars a lot. Now I'll have to get some of those shapes too. :)

DEAR GOD, SO CUTE. I WANT IT ALL. ALL, I SAYYYYYYYY!!!!

(Except for the onigiri with pickled plums. I can't stomach those. I'd want some smoked salmon instead. :DDDDDDDDD)
Loli Cabbit: Tohru with watermelonlolita_minako on April 6th, 2010 12:56 am (UTC)
mmmmm....smoked salmon.....most yummy (esp with cream cheese and scallions! OMGYUM!)
The Amanda: XD Score!kichara on April 7th, 2010 03:56 am (UTC)
Haha yeah Graham warned me when I tried them that a lot of people don't like them (and I can see why, they're pretty crazy tasting!), but I totally loved them. X3

Haven't tried making anything with smoked salmon yet, but I'm sure I will in the future, I'm discovering how much I really like cooking Japanese (it helps a lot since Graham has a lot of experience in cooking AND cooking Japanese food, so I've got a good helper)
Loli Cabbit: Tohru with watermelonlolita_minako on April 6th, 2010 12:54 am (UTC)
Cute and yummy!!!

What does a pickled plum taste like? XD

OH! Try sweet egg and cream cheese in the onigiri. It's uber yummy.
The Amanda: -Lottie :Dkichara on April 7th, 2010 04:00 am (UTC)
They are VERY tart, and a bit salty. A lot of people don't care for them, apparently, but I totally love them lol.

Ooo, I didn't even think of putting cream cheese in the onigiri, that sounds delish! I always get my sushi rolls with cream cheese, they taste SO much better. What is sweet egg, exactly? Like the egg made for tamago sushi?
Loli Cabbitlolita_minako on April 7th, 2010 09:44 am (UTC)
I am not sure (never tried tamago..I need to). But you put sugar, vanilla, and a dash of salt in the eggs and scramble them. Cooking Cute uses oil and not vanilla, but my friend and I make them with vanilla. I put it in to taste, rather than measure them out.

Kinda makes them taste like a dessert...XD
